Hayfever
With the Spring Sunshine bringing some warmth and joy in to our lives,It also can bring misery for some people with the onset of Hayfever. Symptoms can include Sneezing,Itchy Eyes and Nose and nasal discharge.
Hayfever is an abnormal response by the bodies immune system to a normally harmless substance such as grass / tree pollen.The body releases Histamine to attack what it thinks is an invader and this in turn produces the symptoms which cause some people to suffer. Quercetin is one of my favourite natural Hayfever Products. It Helps to stop the release of histamine and has anti- inflammatory properties which can reduce the the symptoms of the allergy. It is usually found with Vitamin C which supports the immune system and has a detoxifying effect on histamine. Pycnogenol is also very good for helping the immune system as it is an antioxidant and can help maintain a healthy blood flow and and circulation and has the ability to strengthen capillaries in the respiratory tract as well as reduce histamine. Weleda also do a nice Homeopathic remedy called Mixed Pollen,which is a combination of different grasses and pollens. No side effects and very effective at reducing the symptoms. Can also be used along side other treatments if required.

 CLA
CLA (conjugated linoleic acid is a fatty acid that occurs naturally in meat and dairy products. Tonalin CLA is a patented form of CLA from Safflower oil,which is naturally rich in the essential fatty acid linoleic acid. Studies of the health benefits of CLA currently suggest it may help with promoting overall well being and positively influence body composition.
In relation to body composition,studies suggest that CLA may work in several ways,such as inhibiting the enzyme LPL which transfers triglycerides from the blood into the fat cells for storage and also increasing the activity of CPT the enzyme that transports fatty acids into the mitochondria in the cells where they are used to make energy.
Tonalin CLA would best suit people on a healthy diet with moderate levels of exercise who wish to tone up their body. |

 Elderflower cordial
The Elderflower season will be upon us soon. If you were too late last year then get prepared and buy your citric acid now before the rush Begins.(its already gaining momentum)You will have no excuses then for being disappointed at not making any. Different recipes are available but if you do not have one,this is popular.
30 Fresh elderflower heads
6 pints (approx. 3 litres) of boiling water
2lb (900g) caster sugar
100g of citric acid (available from Simply Natural)
2 sliced oranges
3 sliced lemons

Method
1. Gently rinse over the Elderflowers to remove any dirt or little creatures.
2. Pour the boiling water over the sugar in a very large mixing bowl. Stir well and leave to cool.
3. Add the citric acid, the sliced oranges and lemons and then the flowers (remove the big stalks).
4. Leave in a cool place for 24 hours, stirring occasionally.
5. Strain through some muslin and bottle.

 Bee Corner
Those who have been following the progress of our bees last year will be pleased to know they have survived the winter with a very strong colony.We treated them for verroa in early February and had a fairly good drop.We then added a super of honey we had saved for them over the winter period to give them a boost, which certainly seems to have done the trick. The Queen is laying nicely and we have lots of brood,larvae and eggs.
We are keeping a close eye on them at the moment looking for Queen cells so they do not swarm (we hope).We will however be doing an artificial swarm in the next couple of weeks as the colony is so large we want to make another hive from it. We will have to sacrifice the honey crop this year but the bees are more important we think.
